Faithfulness Produces Faithfulness: Lessons from the Life of Elijah

In this Sunday evening service, guest preacher Bro. Dan Gardner—filling in while his family ministers on the mission field in Japan—opens the Word to First Kings chapter 17, reading verses 6 through 17, the account of the prophet Elijah, the brook, and the widow of Zarephath. Taking as his theme “faithfulness produces faithfulness,” Bro. Gardner reminds the congregation that our own faithfulness to God is never isolated: when a believer walks faithfully, that example shapes his children, his family, his coworkers, and his church family, while unfaithfulness leaves its mark in the other direction.

Tracing Elijah’s life, he points first to a man who waited until God spoke, refusing to run ahead of the Lord’s direction. When the word of the Lord finally came—commanding Elijah to travel more than a hundred miles across the desert to Zarephath, where God had already appointed a widow to sustain him—the prophet simply arose and obeyed. Bro. Gardner draws out the old hymn’s counsel to “trust and obey,” urging hearers to believe that the God who sustained Elijah by ravens and by a widow’s dwindling barrel of meal will likewise provide for and watch over His people from point A to point B.

The message closes with a direct challenge: everything we do for the rest of our lives will depend upon our faithfulness, so rather than looking for excuses, we should simply do what God has called us to do. As the service moved to a time of invitation, Bro. Gardner encouraged any whom God had spoken to about faithfulness to step out and pray, that the Lord might work in every heart. It was a plain, heartfelt reminder that a faithful walk with God leaves a legacy of faithfulness in those who follow.
