Esteem, Encourage, and Edify: How Believers Treat Their Leaders and One Another

In the Sunday morning worship service, Pastor Chris Parker continued the church’s study of First Thessalonians, turning to Paul’s practical exhortations in 1 Thessalonians 5:12-22. Because the return of Christ runs like a thread through every chapter of the Thessalonian letters, Paul grounds the way we live now in the certainty that Jesus is coming again—an expectation that should lead to more devotion and faithfulness, not less.

Paul first addresses how believers are to treat their spiritual leaders. We are to recognize those who labor among us, honoring them for their walk, their work, and the warning—the faithful preaching—they bring. The church is to esteem them very highly in love for their work’s sake, not because a pastor is older, more educated, or longer saved, but because God has appointed the position. Where leadership is recognized, peace follows; where believers grasp for position, peace is lost.

Turning to how Christians treat one another, the pastor walked through Paul’s tender commands: warn the unruly, comfort the feeble-minded, support the weak, and be patient toward all. Like a parent steadying a child’s first steps, believers are to hold one another up, never rendering evil for evil but always following that which is good.

Finally, Paul gives the marks of a healthy Christian life—rejoice evermore, pray without ceasing, and in everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus. We are not to quench the Spirit or despise preaching, but to prove all things and hold fast that which is good.

The message closed with a reminder that we come to worship God and to be a blessing to others, living each moment as if the Lord were already on His way back.
